Take the Challenge to Hike Lake County Illinois

Like to hike? This has been a really hot summer and that left most of us stuck inside.  Fall is a great opportunity to get out and enjoy all that the  Lake County Forest Preserves have to offer.  Enjoy fall breezes and autumn colors while exploring designated Hike Lake County trails.

Patch.com has a great article about hiking in Lake County, Illinois.  At each preserve, look for Hike Lake County signs at the trailhead to get you started on the right route. Complete just seven of the 12 designated hikes by November 30 and earn a free commemorative shield for your walking stick. Each year features new trails and a colorful new shield.  You can use your iPhone or Android smartphone to complete the challenge.

Finding opportunities for cultural exchange

One of the questions I get from my au pairs and their host families is “How can we find more people to socialize with?”  The au pairs generally like their ESL classes and others are fluent enough in English that they don’t even need them. What they really want though is a chance to talk with Americans.  A chance to learn about our history or food, an opportunity to exchange ideas and  stories.

It reminded me that the cultural exchange aspect of being/having an au pair is a key element to its success.

What are some good ways to find opportunities to rub elbows with the locals?

Classes are always a good choice, but I suggest branching out from the ESL variety.  Art, dance, music and exercise classes are a great place to meet people of all ages.  Don’t limit the choices to colleges though.  Look at  community centers, libraries and stand alone businesses.

Another choice – Clubs and coffee clatches.  A great place to locate these is meetup.com.  You can search by interest and/or location and find the perfect group of people to get to know.

How about concerts, theater and museums?  Often there are lectures offered at these institutions and sometimes a chance to mix and mingle before and after.  Try the Chicago Symphony Orchestra or the Art Institute of Chicago.  For something out of the city there is the fabulous Ravinia FestivalArs Viva, and Lake Forest Symphony

I would love to hear from my readers.  Where are places you like to meet new friends?

Discovering Culture – Lake County Discovery Museum

I had a great talk with one of my host moms today.  She shared with me her philosophy that hosting an au pair should be about more than just childcare.  It should be about an adventure; a sharing of cultures and customs for both Host Family and Au Pair.

As I look around my community gathering ideas for events and outings I continue to notice ways that we can share with the Au Pairs our American culture and history.

Right here in our own little corner of IL we have a great family friendly museum. The Lake County Discovery Museum located in Wauconda.

This year they are commemorating the Civil War Sesquicentennial. Visit their  Civil War Sesquicentennial website to find out about the exhibits, activities and programs They are offering to commemorate this anniversary.
