One of the questions I get from my au pairs and their host families is “How can we find more people to socialize with?” The au pairs generally like their ESL classes and others are fluent enough in English that they don’t even need them. What they really want though is a chance to talk with Americans. A chance to learn about our history or food, an opportunity to exchange ideas and stories.
It reminded me that the cultural exchange aspect of being/having an au pair is a key element to its success.
What are some good ways to find opportunities to rub elbows with the locals?
Classes are always a good choice, but I suggest branching out from the ESL variety. Art, dance, music and exercise classes are a great place to meet people of all ages. Don’t limit the choices to colleges though. Look at community centers, libraries and stand alone businesses.
Another choice – Clubs and coffee clatches. A great place to locate these is meetup.com. You can search by interest and/or location and find the perfect group of people to get to know.
How about concerts, theater and museums? Often there are lectures offered at
these institutions and sometimes a chance to mix and mingle before and after. Try the Chicago Symphony Orchestra or the Art Institute of Chicago. For something out of the city there is the fabulous Ravinia Festival, Ars Viva, and Lake Forest Symphony
I would love to hear from my readers. Where are places you like to meet new friends?
